What happened
On the evening of 19 February 2026 President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that, citing tremendous public interest, he would direct the Secretary of War and other departments and agencies to begin identifying and releasing government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena and UFOs, along with any other connected information. The announcement came hours after he accused former President Barack Obama of revealing classified information on a podcast, where Obama had said aliens were real but were not being kept at Area 51; Obama later clarified that he saw no evidence during his presidency that extraterrestrials had made contact and was speaking statistically about life in a vast universe. Trump told reporters he did not know if aliens were real. The post did not say whether classified material would be included or set a timetable. It set in motion the interagency effort that produced the first public release of files in May 2026.
The official explanation
Commentators read the announcement partly as a political jab at Obama and as part of a broader pattern of high-profile file releases by the administration, including JFK, RFK and Martin Luther King Jr. records. The directive itself makes no claim that the government holds evidence of extraterrestrial life; it orders agencies to identify and release relevant records. Obama's clarification, that he saw no evidence of contact while in office, undercut the idea that he had leaked anything secret, and the post set no deadline or standard for what would be released.
The anomalous case
For decades, advocates said only a president could cut through the classification walls around UAP. Here a sitting president publicly ordered the Pentagon and other agencies to find and release files on alien and extraterrestrial life, not just unidentified objects, which is a striking scope for a government that officially says it has found no evidence of either. Congress had tried and partly failed to force disclosure in 2023 when the review board and eminent domain provisions were stripped from the Schumer–Rounds act. The directive revived that unfinished business from the top, and supporters argue the wording itself acknowledges that relevant records exist and have been withheld.
The strongest argument that this was something genuinely unknown or classified, with each claim attributed to the person who made it.
