What happened

On a summer evening in August 1990, two young men who had been working at hotels in Pitlochry were walking on the hills above the hamlet of Calvine when, by their account, a huge diamond-shaped object hung silently in the sky. They sheltered under trees and took six photographs while a military jet, later identified by the Ministry of Defence as a Harrier, made low passes nearby. The men gave their negatives to the Glasgow tabloid Daily Record, which passed the story to an RAF press officer and then to the MoD. The paper never ran it, the negatives vanished, and the witnesses were never traced. For three decades the case survived only as a rumour, a briefing note and two blurry photocopies in files opened at The National Archives in 2009. In 2022 researcher David Clarke tracked down retired RAF press officer Craig Lindsay, who had kept the only known first-generation print for 32 years. Its publication triggered worldwide headlines calling it the best UFO photo ever taken.

The official explanation

No official explanation was ever published. Sheffield Hallam University photographic specialist Andrew Robinson concluded the surviving print is a genuine photograph of a scene in front of the camera, but could not rule out staging, such as a kite, model or object hung close to the lens. Some commentators suggest a cardboard shape on a string; former AARO director Sean Kirkpatrick has been quoted arguing the image shows a reflection in water and was doctored. David Clarke, who once suspected trickery, now favours a classified US 'black project' aircraft.

The anomalous case

This is one of very few UFO photographs that went straight from witnesses to a newspaper and into Ministry of Defence analysis. Former MoD UFO-desk officer Nick Pope has said the department's experts judged the images were not fakes and showed a solid craft at least the size of a Harrier, and the 1990 files show the photos were examined by the DI55 intelligence branch and RAF photo analysts. A Harrier appears in the same frame, which suggests the military was present. Robinson's 2022 analysis found no sign of darkroom manipulation. Clarke says a Defence Intelligence source told him the men photographed a classified US platform flown from RAF Machrihanish, and that an MoD officer said staff knew it was an experimental US craft. The original negatives have never resurfaced and the witnesses have never come forward. Whether it was exotic technology or something stranger, the object was never publicly identified.

The strongest argument that this was something genuinely unknown or classified, with each claim attributed to the person who made it.
